How long does SEO take to work?
Three to six months before you can tell whether anything worked, and up to a year for a competitive term on a young site. Anyone giving you a shorter number without seeing your site is guessing, and anyone giving you a guarantee is doing something worse.
Why the answer varies so much
The same work takes very different amounts of time depending on where you start.
- • How old the domain is. A site Google has trusted for years moves faster than one registered last month.
- • How competitive the term is. Ranking for a service in one town is a different problem from ranking nationally.
- • Whether the page already exists. Improving a page ranking eleventh is far quicker than creating one from nothing.
- • Whether the site is technically sound. If pages are not indexed, nothing else matters until they are.
What is actually fast
Some changes show up in days rather than months, and they are worth doing first because they need no ranking change at all.
- • Rewriting a title and description on a page already ranking. More people click the same position.
- • Fixing a page Google could not index. It goes from invisible to visible.
- • Adding structured data, which can change how the result looks within a couple of weeks.
How to tell whether it is working
Watch impressions in Search Console before clicks. Impressions rise first, because you start appearing for more searches before you appear high enough to be clicked.
If impressions are climbing and clicks are not, the work is landing and the titles need attention. That distinction saves people from abandoning something that was starting to work.
Find what is costing you search clicks, then watch the fix work.
VisitorPing reads your own Search Console data for the pages losing clicks, then rings your phone the moment someone lands on your website.
